Disclaimer: I received a pack of reusable silicone straws from GoSilias part of being a BibRave Pro. Learn more about becoming a BibRave Pro (ambassador), and check out BibRave.com to find and write race reviews!
If you grew up in the 80’s and 90’s you remember the Reduce; Reuse; Recycle mantra. Not much has changed in the last 30-ish years; and, if you’ve paid attention to the news lately there has been a ton of back and forth about mans ability to reduce their carbon footprint. Plastics entering the ocean are a real problem. If we don’t act now, by the year 2050 there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish(by weight).
The reason plastic straws are such a big deal are most plastic straws are too lightweight to make it through the mechanical recycling sorter. They drop through sorting screens and mix with other materials and are too small to separate, contaminating recycling loads or getting disposed as garbage.
Plastic straws are really bad for the ocean. It’s estimated that we use over 500 million every day in America, and most of those end up in our oceans, polluting the water and killing marine life. I want to encourage people to stop using as many plastic straws, but what’s the alternative…those micro paper towel roles which shred in your mouth?
That’s why I use GoSili reusable straws.
I’m not going to lie, there are a few problems with carrying reusable straws.
They are great when you remember them but…well…you have to remember them. Thankfully GoSili has included little carrying containers for some of their straws.
These are really easy to clean also! Yes…I know I’m wasting water by cleaning a straw…BUT I am not killing a fish. And really, I’m not wasting a lot of water. I need to clean my cup…and even better. The straws are dishwasher safe!
I fully endorse having them and it has made car rides fun with the kids. They may or may-not have tried to use them as lightsabers in the back seat. (Its funny now but not while I was being sprayed with straw water…)
