Because I am talking about some health related stuff; I want to start by saying I am not a medical professional and despite something working for me; my practices are not clinically proven for all injuries. Please see a medical professional if you are experiencing pain and discomfort.
If you have looked at any of my race pictures you have probably seen that I use some sort of sport support / kinesiology tape. About 2 years ago I hyper extended some muscles in my right leg. I haven’t seen a doctor about it or anything…but its held up so far.
The tape I use works because it helps in reducing pressure to the tissue in my knee. I also feel that correct taping helps provide support to my leg muscles by helping the muscle to not over-extend or over-contract. The reason I use the tape is when I injured my leg the lymphatic fluid built up causing inflammation and swelling. Now the excess fluid produced by the body helped protect the damaged tissues from further injury and; although a certain amount of swelling is unavoidable, it’s important to do what you can to help control the process for these important reasons:
- Too much swelling may slow down healing.
- Untreated inflammation may lead to even more swelling.
- Excess swelling can be uncomfortable and sometimes limit your range of motion.
- This accumulation of lymphatic fluids may cause increased pressure on muscles and tissue which can cause significant discomfort or pain.
I joke; but I’ve taped my leg up so many times that I can shave the perfect shape of tape into my wookie like legs so that I don’t have to go baby smooth for 1 race.
Okay; why BodyHelix and not the tape?
One of the things I really don’t like about taping my muscles is having to shave my legs. Okay ladies… I get it. You do it all the time. Sorry. But we can all agree life would be better without having to do it and life would be better if it didn’t itch when it grew back.
Another reason is that research shows a drastic decrease in pain sensation when compression is applied to injuries. BodyHelix uses medical-grade compression in the range of 20- 30 millimeters of mercury (or mmHg in the scientific community). For reference; the higher the number, the more pressure we feel.
Lastly; tape only lasts so long. Depending on humidity, sweat, types of exercise (swimming vs running) and when I apply the tape in relation to when I need it (morning of race vs. night before); the tape can last a few hours or a few days. I have had tape on for a week; but, I have also had tape fall off mid way through the race. The Body Helix Knee Sleeve can be reused repeatedly.
Okay; why BodyHelix and not the local drug store / unbranded sleeve?
Unlike other runner’s knee braces, a Body Helix knee sleeve is guaranteed to not slip during activity, making it the best knee support offered today.
Many of compression sleeves on the market only stretch up to 50%, which restricts joint movement. Body Helix Knee Sleeve is made of an innovative material which stretches more than my body can; which means wearing BodyHelix compression won’t alter the way I am active.
Lastly, The BodyHelix fabric prevents the absorption of sweat, odor, and bacteria growth. Additionally, I can safely machine wash and dry my Helix after every use!
I will keep you-all updated on how the sleeves help while training this season!
